MOURNING
Tomorrow, March 1st, is the Disability Day of Mourning. The day marks time for disability communities to come together to remember the victims of filicide – people with disabilities killed by their family members. The Autistic Self-Advocacy Network has been cataloguing these deaths since 2014 and their site contains cases since 1980. They also publish an anti-filicide toolkit with a guidebook for coordinators for vigil site coordinators.

Fierce Student Activists
UCLA’s Disability Student Union, with many other student activists, organized the longest sit-in in the university’s history. They vacated Murphy Hall after 16 days with many victories and more expected soon.
Protecting Trans Youth
Disabled Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is weaponizing the medicalization of trans youth by ordering the state Department of Family and Protective Services to investigate gender affirming healthcare as abuse. Disability Rights Texas responded by stressing the life-saving value of this care, citing a 2018 study from the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund about “Health Disparities at the Intersection of Disability and Gender Identity.”
Paralympic Winter Games
The games begin on Friday, March 4th. In the U.S., NBC will present primetime coverage for the first time. The games will also be shown on Peacock, USA Network, Olympic Channel, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. In the U.S., Channel 4 will have an all-disabled presenting team for its coverage.

Mid Atlantic Arts and Americans for the Arts is establishing a committee of paid advisors to assist with the development of webinar packages on arts and disability justice for local and state arts agencies in the mid-Atlantic region. More here.
