Sunset on Disability Pride Month

In the twilight of another July…

Protesters interrupted the American Association of People with Disabilities ADA Celebration event when a speaker from the presenting sponsor, Wells Fargo, addressed the room. The AAPD then instructed access workers not to interpret or caption the protesters’ message, that there is NO DISABLED PRIDE IN GENOCIDE. Wells Fargo, in addition to Northrop Grumman, another participant at the event, gives loans to Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit Systems, and “funded multiple resource extraction projects, such as the Dakota Access Pipeline, which violates tribal sovereignty and the health and well-being of Native people, as well as private prisons and ICE detention centers,” according to a press release from Disability Divest.
The Autistic Self-Advocacy Network published a memo on the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling that ends what is called the “Chevron deference,” which gives federal agencies the power to create rules when a law is ambiguous. “It will exacerbate social problems – from climate change to student debt burdens – that disproportionately affect those who are already struggling,” the memo reads.
